Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about VAT consultancy.

What is Value Added Tax (VAT) and Who Needs to Pay It?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a 5% indirect tax on the consumption of goods and services, applied at each stage of the supply chain. It was introduced in the UAE on January 1, 2018. VAT provides the government with additional revenue to fund public services. Businesses with annual taxable supplies exceeding AED 375,000 are required to register for VAT.

How to Register for VAT

Businesses can register online through the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) eServices portal. Creating an account is required before registration.

Does VAT Apply to All Goods and Services?

VAT generally applies to most goods and services in the UAE. However, some items are either zero-rated (taxed at 0%) or exempt. Refer to FTA guidelines for a detailed list of exemptions.

Which Businesses Must Pay VAT?

All VAT-registered businesses in the UAE, including those in free zones, must comply. However, transactions in ‘designated zones’, as defined by the UAE Cabinet, may be treated as outside the UAE for tax purposes, making transfers between such zones VAT-free.

What is the VAT Return Filing Process?

At the end of each tax period, VAT-registered businesses must file a VAT return via the FTA portal. The return summarizes taxable supplies, purchases, and VAT due.

When to File VAT Returns?

VAT returns must be submitted within 28 days after each tax period ends. The tax periods are:

  • Quarterly for businesses with annual turnover below AED 150 million
  • Monthly for businesses with annual turnover of AED 150 million or more
